Periodontal diseases are inflammatory conditions of infectious nature, with a multifactorial aetiology. The new concepts in the aetiology and pathogenesis of periodontal diseases (e.g. dysbiosis) may have profound implications in the management of periodontal diseases, including classification, case definition, prevention or treatment. The new classification, discussed in November 2017, and presented in 2018, captures some of the new concepts and knowledge on periodontal diseases, aiming to help the clinician in making a more accurate diagnosis, and giving the patient the benefit of being managed as a person and not as a condition.
Learning Objective :
- To understand the new concepts proposed to explain the etiology of periodontal diseases.
- To evaluate the translation of those concepts into the clinical practice and the new classification of periodontal diseases
- To discuss the new classification of periodontal diseases.
- To understand how the new classification of periodontal diseases could impact the clinical practice
