Prof. Renvert is the research director at the Department of Oral Health Sciences, Kristianstad University, Sweden. He is also anhonorary professor at Dublin Dental Hospital and at the Blekinge Institute of Technology. He is past president of Swedish Society of Periodontology. He has served the European Federation of Periodontology as president and secretary general, and was the scientific chairman for Europerio 5 and chairman of the Europerio 6.

Effective Management of Periodontal Diseases: An Evidence-Based State-of-the-Art Approach – Surgical Therapy
In patients where healing cannot be obtained following non-surgical treatment of periodontitis, surgical procedures is a treatment option. It is, however, important that the patient is capable and willing to perform good oral hygiene before any surgical interventions are performed. The surgical intervention can aim at regenerate lost periodontal tissues and different bone augmentation materials are often used. Teeth lost due to periodontal disease are often replaced by dental implants. Inflammation at implants is more difficult to treat than that at teeth, and individuals with a history of periodontal disease are at greater risk to develop peri-implant diseases.
