The assessment of patients with cardiovascular disease, prior to the completion of dental procedures, has acquired particular connotations currently. There has been an increase in dental procedures for older patients who have a higher incidence of cardiovascular disease, not only linked to prostheses but also dental surgeries and implants. Procedures associated with more complex techniques such as bone regeneration maneuvers, maxillary sinus floor elevation, bone fillings, etc. carry greater risk. This should not be minimized in the preoperative assessment, both for the risks linked to the procedure as well as for the stress that is generated in the patient. The latter are performed on an outpatient basis with local anaesthesia in the dental office, which is why an adequate cardiological assessment should be carried out in order to minimize the possible cardiovascular complications, and evaluatethe drugs to be used in the procedure and their cardiovascular effects.
Learning Objective :
- Apply the pharmacology of local anaesthetics in dental practice in patients with cardiovascular disease.
- Recognize the systemic adverse effects of local anaesthetics.
- Evaluate the importance of the use of vasoconstrictors and their adverse effects.
