Evaluating Economic and Social Impacts of Integrated NCD-dental Strategies Targeting Sugar Consumption
Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and oral diseases have a substantial bearing on people’s wellbeing and imply considerable costs to society. Sugar consumption is a common risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, and tooth decay. After an overview of current knowledge about the sugar-attributable economic and social impacts of NCDs and oral diseases, this talk will focus on state-of-the-art methods for assessing the impacts of integrated NCD-dental strategies suitable to address existing knowledge gaps. Attention will specifically be given to taxation of sugar-rich foods and beverages, adopting transparent food and nutrition labelling, and implementing broader public health and health promotion programmes.
